Tucked away in Swaby’s Yard, just off Beverley’s Saturday Market, Chequers is a traditional, independent micropub with a big heart and a welcoming atmosphere.
Established in 2013, we pride ourselves on serving an outstanding selection of real ales, craft beers, traditional ciders and quality wines. Whether you’re a regular, a real ale enthusiast or simply looking for somewhere a little different, you’ll find a warm welcome, good company and plenty of conversation.
No televisions. No background music. Just good drinks, good banter and a proper community pub.
Our Story
Independent since 2013
Chequers was founded in 2013 by Ian Allott and became the first micropub to open in Yorkshire, helping to bring the traditional, community-focused pub experience to Beverley.
After more than a decade at the helm, Ian retired in 2025. The pub is now owned by Sarah Ellerington-Greensides, who had been running Chequers for Ian since 2019.
Sarah continues the spirit on which the pub was founded: a relaxed, friendly place where quality drinks, conversation and community matter more than anything else.

Something for every taste
We take pride in offering a carefully chosen and ever-changing range of drinks, with something new to discover whenever you visit.
Real Ale — 5 rotating cask ales
Five hand-pulled real ales from breweries across the UK. Our rotating selection means there’s always the opportunity to discover a new favourite, from familiar local styles to interesting beers from further afield.
Craft Beer — 8 rotating keg lines
Eight keg lines showcasing beers from across the world. Expect variety, changing selections and plenty to explore for anyone who enjoys discovering something different.
Traditional Cider — 7 varieties
Seven traditional bag-in-box ciders, offering a range of choices for cider lovers.
Wine — 9 outstanding wines
A selection of nine quality wines, giving you plenty of choice whether you fancy a glass with friends or something different from the usual pub offering.
We concentrate on what we do best: great beer, cider and wine. We do not serve lager, spirits, ice or mixers.
Something from the Fridge
Not everything comes from the bar! Our fridges are stocked with a great range of drinks, including alcohol-free options, Belgian favourites, German Weiss beers and soft drinks. Whether you're taking a break from alcohol or fancy something a little different, there's plenty to choose from.
Gluten-free and allergen support
We want our customers to feel comfortable asking about what they drink and eat. Please speak to us about allergens and gluten-free options, and we’ll help you establish what is suitable for your needs.
A Traditional Micropub Experience
Small, cosy and full of character
Chequers is all about the simple pleasures of pub life. Our intimate setting encourages conversation, bringing people together over a good pint and creating the kind of atmosphere where strangers can become familiar faces.
You won’t find televisions or background music here. Instead, the soundtrack is good conversation, laughter and friendly banter.
Fancy something to nibble alongside your drink? Our take on Yorkshire tapas keeps things simple, with crisps and nuts available to enjoy at the bar.
Please note that we do not serve hot food.
Our sun-trap outdoor area
When the sun shines, our outdoor area is a lovely place to settle down with a drink. It catches the sun during the summer months, making it an ideal spot to relax, catch up with friends and enjoy Beverley at its best.
